Drew and Kazue were already at the boxcar when he arrived. Drew’s shirt was sweat-drenched and scuffed like he’d taken a fall, but he looked otherwise unhurt. Kazue sat at the computer, looking like nothing had happened except that her fingers speeding over the keyboard had bloody knuckles. Malcolm pulled himself up into the car. Everything hurt, but the relief of seeing them safe gave him energy.

Drew turned toward him and shook his head. “We couldn’t get Gatekeeper out. Your aunt came back.”

“I know,” Malcolm said. “She left. My uncle…” And then the world seemed to tilt around him, and his legs weren’t listening. He tipped sideways, and his head banged against the metal wall.

Drew was there in a second, pulling him over to the couch. “Are you okay? Are you hurt?”

“It was my uncle,” Malcolm said. “He did something to my head. He’s…he’s the one who changes people’s memories.” Malcolm heaved himself along the couch until his head rested on the arm. A spring was poking into his neck, but he felt too tired and dizzy to move again. “He figured out you guys were going after Gatekeeper. That’s why my aunt showed up.”

“So he read your mind?” Drew asked.

“I guess.”

“Does he know where we are?”

“I don’t know,” Malcolm said. “I didn’t even know he had powers until today. I don’t know how it works. But he said it can be different when he does it to family.”

Drew looked around nervously.

Kazue shrugged. “If he knows everything Malcolm knows—not to mention everything Blair knows—we can’t really escape them for long. They’ll know this place. They’ll know where your family is, Drew. We’ll just have to wait and see.” Kazue returned to typing. “I actually wondered if it might be Felix. Seemed weird, one guy without powers in the whole family.”

Malcolm forced himself to sit up. “Can you tell me what happened to you guys?”

“We got in,” Drew said. “I melted a tunnel through a back wall, and Kazue dug us into the basement. No security, no one hurt. But we barely started explaining the situation to Gatekeeper when your aunt got there and chased us out.”

“Didn’t even get her autograph,” Kazue said.

“Had to do some damage on the way out,” Drew said. “Kaz punched the front doors down and then ran us both out of there at high speed. Got a little more public than I would have liked.”

“You punched the…holy crap, Kazue, those doors are sturdy. I can’t even get through those things. What kind of superstrength do you have if you can—”

“Not superstrength,” Kazue said.

Drew shook his head and sighed. “She says she has, like, batteries that store up ‘potential kinetic energy.’ She can be weird about it.”

“I’m not weird about it. I’m precise,” Kazue said.

“So what do we do? Wait to see if my family is going to find us?” Malcolm asked.

Drew wiped his sweat-slicked hands on his pants and shook his head. “Not just wait. Come up with another plan.”
